Africa Centre is a charity and nonprofit organization founded in 2000 by a group of activists within the African immigrant community in Ireland. This group of activists wanted the community to have be active participants and have a voice in Irish society. The organization was officially launched in October 2001 by Ms. Melanie Verweord, the then South African Ambassador to Ireland, and Mr. Niall Crowley, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Equality Authority.

The African communities in Ireland represent, in themselves, the variety of a vast continent with its own rich cultural diversity. The growing presence of these communities produced a need to provide a voice for the growing number of Africans in Ireland and this is what the Africa Centre community participation is all about.

An enhanced African presence in Ireland means that awareness, contact and exchange need to be central to the mutual advantage of all interested people. This was a key element in the original vision that saw the emergence of the Africa Centre in the early 2000.

Since its formal launch in October 2001, the Africa Centre has made great strides. The Africa Centre has promoted and encouraged the development of initiatives that explain African concerns to a wider audience. Simultaneously these encourage the linkages and strategies that enable new African communities in Ireland to address their needs.

For some time the Africa Centre has recognized the need to select priorities within the context of identified needs and required resources. The need for a Strategic Plan is a key requirement in setting out clear objectives and activities. This also helps in clarifying the central resource requirements in the years ahead. The organisation has been doing this in its consultation with the African community. This has helped significantly in the last thirteen years with defining the strategic engagement.

The organisation is registered under the legal name of 'Africa Solidarity Centre Limited' and it is operating as 'Africa Centre'.

Africa Centre is also a registered charity with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. The centre is under registration number CHY 14980. This status grants the Centre tax exemption, which applies to income Tax/Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax as well as to the income and property of the organization.
